United Kingdom (Country threat level - 2)

Violence erupted at an anti-Islam rally in central Birmingham on 5 September 2009, as counter-demonstrators moved in and confronted the rally participants. Organizers from the right-wing English Defense League stated that the rally was called to protest against fundamental Islamic extremism in the United Kingdom. Anti-fascist groups that oppose the English Defense League also gathered nearby and accused the activists of racism, prejudice and discrimination against Muslims. Clashes broke out when police officers moved in to quell scuffles among the crowd. Authorities stated that 90 people, including English Defense League members and counter-demonstrators, were arrested for committing acts of violence and vandalism during the rally. Clashes erupted at a similar English Defense League rally held in Birmingham in August 2009. Additional police officers have reportedly been deployed throughout Birmingham to prevent any further unrest. Another English Defense League rally is scheduled to occur in Manchester in October 2009.

Afghanistan (Country threat level - 5)

A suicide bomber blew himself up in a vehicle outside the main gate of the military base at Kabul International Airport (OAKB/KBL) at approximately 0820 local time on 8 September 2009. The attack killed two Afghan civilians; six other Afghan civilians and four international soldiers were also injured. Operations at the airport were immediately suspended, but resumed within an hour of the attack. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Venezuela (Country threat level - 4):

At 1200 local time on 4 September 2009 three separate demonstrations will be held in Caracas to protest President Hugo Chavez’s pursuit of a socialist revolution in Latin America as well as his contentious relationships with Colombia and the United States, which have increased tensions in the region. One group will meet at Parque Cristal, another at Plaza Brion in the Chacaito district, and another at Plaza Venezuela. All three groups will converge at Plaza Altamira in central Caracas. On 28 August Venezuela’s attorney general threatened to arrest any individual taking part in protests against the Chavez administration, claiming that such actions qualify as a form of civil rebellion. As a result, police officers — who often use force to dispel demonstrators — are likely to be present at the protest sites. Travelers should avoid any area where demonstrations are taking place as a precaution.

Simultaneous worldwide protests have been organized on 4 September through global social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Groups from Spain, England, France, Israel, Canada, the United States, Peru, Honduras, Colombia, Brazil, Germany, Ecuador and other nations have asked to participate in the action. Approximately 32,000 individuals have expressed interest in participating via the Facebook Web site.

“Ted Kennedy’s friends laughingly recalled Friday the time N.Y. Daily News photographers caught him making love to a woman on a boat on the Riviera. The opposition loved it. Republicans saw the photos and thought he’d changed his position on offshore drilling.” –comedian Argus Hamilton

Kissing Off Eastern Europe…

35c-survivor.jpgThe U.S. has abandoned plans to install a missile defense system in Europe, according to a report. If true, this is a major strategic error that will have serious consequences for our allies in Europe and for us.
