June 11, 2009 by Tim McDowell.
A gunman opened fire inside the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., at approximately 1300 local time on 10 June 2009. The gunman shot two security guards before other guards returned fire. The museum was immediately evacuated and no visitors were harmed. One security guard died; the gunman remains in critical condition in a hospital. The museum will remain closed on 11 June.
Authorities identified the suspected gunman — who is believed to have acted alone — as an 88-year-old man who has been described as a white supremacist and Holocaust denier. He had previously served a jail sentence after entering the Eccles Building in Washington with weapons in 1981 in an attempt to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve Board.
