The U.S. Consulate in Hermosillo issued a Warden Message on 16 October 2008. The message consist of the text of a statement released by the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico on 14 October and reads in part as follows: ” Every six months, the State Department revises its Travel Alerts, and in light of the increase in drug cartel-related violence, the latest Travel Alert for Mexico has been updated with more specific information on concerns in the border area. The recent midnight attack at our Consulate in Monterrey further highlights the relevance of this update.“The vast majority of Americans travel in Mexico without incident and the information in the Travel Alert will help ensure that continues to be the case. The Travel Alert for Mexico issued today reflects the current reality in Mexico; in particular, the stepped up violence along the U.S.-Mexico border. These conditions are widely known and reported on here in Mexico, as well as in the U.S. border region, but many tourists and business people are less aware. The Travel Alert does not advise Americans to avoid travel to any region or city, but it does describe risks. It is important that travelers be aware of these risks, factor them into their planning and remain alert to their surroundings. At this time it is unclear what the motive behind this incident was, and the statements are being investigated with the cooperation of Mexican authorities. This incident followed two separate, deadly attacks targeting Jalisco state police in Guadalajara. The consulate remains open for business. “Currently, U.S. Embassy Mexico has no information regarding specific threats to American citizens or American business interests anywhere in Mexico. Authorities discovered a second bomb blast at an EnCana natural gas pipeline in a remote area approximately 30 mi/50 km from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, on 16 October 2008. It is not known when the blast occurred. The explosion resulted in the release of a small quantity of sour natural gas, which contains the dangerous chemical compound hydrogen sulfide. There were no reports of injuries from the blast. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) terrorist unit suspects that the blast is linked to an incident that occurred near the same area on 11 October 2008. A local news outlet received a threatening letter earlier in October advising oil and natural gas companies to leave the area. An eco-terrorist group previously launched attacks on oil and gas infrastructure in nearby Alberta during the 1990s in a campaign against sour natural gas.
