DHS Awards First Responder Grants

The Homeland Security Department has announced $34.6 million in equipment and training grants to first responders across the nation as a part of the 2006 Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program, which funds personal protective equipment; thermal imaging, night vision, and video surveillance tools; chemical and biological detection tools; information technology and risk management tools; and interoperable communications equipment. In addition, more than $492.3 million will be awarded this year to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency management organizations under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.
