Israel Defense Force to Rescue Corporal Shalit

As the offensive by the Israel Defense Forces continues to free Corporal Gilad Shalit, the military wing of the Hamas has threatened to target and attack schools, institutions, and other critical infrastructures.

Hamas’ armed wing threatened on Sunday to attack Israeli schools, institutions and power plants if Israel, pursuing a military campaign to free a soldier, continued its air strikes against infrastructure in Gaza.”If they continue with these attacks we will strike similar targets in the Zionist Occupation which we have not targeted until now,” said Abu Ubaida, a spokesman for the armed wing of the Palestinian militant movement.Below is a list of some of the past attacks that have occurred during the summer months against educational institutions and other sites that include transportation and tourist venues.

Security personnel at various educational institutions including schools, universities, summer camps, religious schools should be advised of such a threat and should review current security programs and response plans with regards to the stated threats of which include:
Suicide bombings, vehicle devices, secondary attacks, and armed assaults and hostage takings.
Concern should be addressed to increase situational awareness at various public venues.
Security personnel should train and drill responses to such threats in coordination with law Enforcement and emergency services.

Overview of past attacks against educational institutions during summer months:

July 31, 2002 JERUSALEM. A bomb planted in the cafeteria of the Hebrew University killed nine and injured at least fifty. The dead included three American citizens and the wounded were of several nationalities, including South Koreans and Japanese. The foreign students were taking summer school courses. Hamas claimed responsibility.

July 28, 1980 BELGIUM. An Arab hurled two hand grenades into a group of about 40 young Jews in Antwerp, killing one, and injuring 17 more teenagers waiting for a bus to take them to a summer camp. The captured Moroccan suspect identified himself as a Palestinian who acted for his ideals.

May 31, 2001 NETANYA. A vehicle explosive device detonated shortly after 1600 hours outside a school where students were studying late for exams. Eight people were injured. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) claimed responsibility.

September 01, 2004 BESLAN. Chechan terrorists seized school number 1, holding over 1200 school children and adults hostage on September 1, 2004, in the Russian town of Beslan in North Ossetia. Two days later, shooting broke out between the hostage-takers and Russian security forces. At the end of the incident, 344 civilians were killed, 186 of them children and hundreds more wounded.

July 07, 2005 LONDON. Suicide bombers targeted the London Underground and transportation system killing 52 and injuring several hundred others.

August 07, 1998 KENYA and TANZANIA. Truck bomb attack against US embassies. Over 200 people killed, thousands injured. Al Qaeda claimed responsibility.

August 05 2003 INDONESIA. Vehicle bomb attack against Marriott Hotel. 12 killed, 100 injured.
